thursday stats

I am burning 3000 cals per day! Holy crap. I need to eat more if I want to gain muscle mass. That 1900 intake number is inaccurate; I lost track of my intake. Definitely didn’t pass an intake of 3000 or even 2500.

I walked for 20 minutes in the middle of the day. That boosted my steps up a couple thousand, but still not to my 10,000 goal. However, my treadmill time in the evening was less than usual, so maybe that will get it up there.

That evening, it was the third and last time with the trainer. We did legs, something I didn’t think I needed. I thought my leg muscles were set with all the running. But, man, we did some bulgarian squats and could barely walk afterwards. May have to reconsider leg work.

I’ll summarize my trainer routines in another post, now that I have his notes from our sessions. The similarity to Arnold’s book’s routine is encouraging.

I slept better not worrying about waking up early. I slept in until 6:30am. Ha. Still only got 7 hours of sleep. Not enough. Need to get us to bed earlier.

This is frustrating that I can’t control my bed time. Lori is trying to catch up on Gray’s Anatomy episodes and has a long way to go, I guess. Nothing is worse than going to sleep early despite the TV being on, then being woken up an hour or so into sleeping by the other person going to bed. I hate being woken up like nothing else.

Maybe pure exhaustion will make it more doable. I am getting super tired around 8pm these days. Unusual for me, used to stay up late, but maybe the early waking is finally catching up to me.

GoWear Fit Day 1

I love self-analysis, don’t you? These stats excite me.

The first day has been successfully tracked. Here are some thoughts based on the data.

  • I burned 368 cals lifting weights with the trainer for an hour. Had no honest idea how much weight lifting burned.  Assumed I burned less than estimates since my muscles are small. Burns 2-3x more cals than I expected.
  • I burned the same cals in half the time on the treadmill.
  • Sleeping isn’t being lazy. I burn slightly more calories sleeping than I do at work sitting at my desk! The only thing that makes work burn more is walking to the water cooler.
  • I should take walk breaks. I hadn’t thought about how many steps I take in a day, but I’m thinking I may go for walks at lunch so that I can hit that 10,000/day goal that the system arbitrarily set for me as an “active” person.
  • My daily calorie burn is higher than I expected by a few hundred cals.
  • Weight loss is not basic math. I should still be losing weight at this ongoing deficit, but I am not. I have not lost a pound in weeks. In fact I think I’ve gained.
  • I do twice as much “moderate” activity as I thought. Doing anything on your feet is at least moderate activity. As far as the gym is concerned, weight lifting counted as moderate activity, but jogging is vigorous. So I’m upping that activity target. My new activity target is 2.5 hrs a day (2 hours moderate. 30 minutes vigorous).

So that’s my day 1 assessment.  More to come of course.

As far as the trainer went, it was another great session of upper body muscle work.  I won’t embarrass myself trying to explain each exercise like I did yesterday.  I’ll just say we focussed on biceps, back muscles, fore arms, and abs. Just one more day with his expertise at my fingertips.  He said he’d make me a copy of his notes so I could study them when he let’s me loose.

Trainer day 1

100% chance of evening rain

First off, it was raining hard. Rain I have always taken to be a sign of significant things happening. Ridiculous, I know, but I love the rain so much I give it religious value. Just let me have my thing.

The first day with the trainer was great. Showed up on time, got started shortly thereafter. He was a guy in his twenties, full of energy and information. I remember when I was his age. Ahh.

We did 5 activities with weights on a bench and 2 activities without weights on a bench.

The weight work involved pushing away with the arms. A couple focussed on triceps.

  1. bench press
  2. inclined press
  3. independent arm press sitting up
  4. press with hands close together
  5. bar pull down with elbows at side

He recommended doing, and we did, 3 sets of 10 reps of each. Each set should be to failure, and was, mostly. We were trying to figure out my max weight on each, so a few times it was lighter than I could have done.

The 2 exercises without weights involved lifting the legs in a couple different ways, working the stomach muscles. I think I found a new muscle in there.

  1. leg lifts with hands under butt
  2. leg lifts with hands holding bench behind head

I was happy to be escorted around the weights area and get some professional technique advice. Exactly what I wanted. It all happened in about an hour.

He said there would be obvious progress in 2 months at 3-4 times a week.  I’ve been doing something wrong up until now is all I can say.

Then I jogged for 20 minutes on the treadmill and went home.

Tomorrow will be day 2 with him. Yay!

Bodybugg and weight trainer coming this week

New stuff this week!

First, this week I get my 3 days with a trainer at 24 Hour Fitness. Going to see about some weight lifting techniques. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings. Looking forward to getting some knowledge in this area. Get some meat on these bones eventually.

Second, along those lines, I even bought Arnold’s weight lifting book. Don’t plan on being a pro or getting huge, but the tips should prove useful. Arnold probably has some good tips, you think?

Third, my BodyBugg is likely to arrive this week. Going to find out how many calories I actually burn in a day instead of these estimates that could be hundreds of points off, who knows. I’ll know how much I burn lifting weights, running treadmill, sleeping, eating, thinking. It will be great. Will continue tracking the food with LIVESTRONG’s iphone app unless the BodyBugg food tracking proves doable. I can still do the math at LS and just use the BB for calorie burn info.  We’ll see.

Good stuff ahead!

Starting with a trainer

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Lori got me 3 sessions with a personal trainer so that I might get some weight lifting technique.

I signed up Saturday. I work out in the mornings, but the trainer was only available in the evenings. So this week was going to be evenings.

I went in Tuesday thinking my training would start. Turns out I was a week off. So it’s back to mornings this week.

Got some new workout pants. Those got a successful test drive on Tuesday. They’re a little thicker, and take longer to dry than my smaller runner style shorts. But they’re more in fashion for weight lifting maybe. Ha.
