My Top 5 Podcasts for December

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Here are my favorite podcasts this month.

1. “Stuff You Should Know” (web, itunes)

Interesting factoids about stuff I wouldn’t otherwise care about presented in a relaxed and organized way.

2. “TWIT” (web, itunes)

Tech news with knowledgeable guests.  The host, Leo Laporte, is a talk show hosting machine and somehow finds time to know everything about the latest tech stuff as well. They make sure I hear what’s anywhere near the mainstream.  I think it has enough listeners to actually direct the industry.

3. “You Look Nice Today” (web, itunes)

John Hodgeman (“PC” in the Mac ads) guests in this improvised comedy dialog between a few quick-witted guys including Merlin Mann.  I’ve spit up some coffee listening to this.

4. “The Bugle” (web, itunes)

Turns out there is humor in world headlines. I don’t know how they come up with this stuff.

5. “BoagWorld” (web, itunes)

Entertaining host talks about web development.

So, I subscribe and listen to 49 podcasts.  (Up until I counted just now, I was saying 30.)  Some release content more frequently than others.  It’s good background for commuting, playing XBox, working out (I’ve heard), and, depending on concentration requirements, working.

Podcasting has a small audience, although growing, and is usually a labor of love.  Unfortunate.  The public is missing out big time!  Hardly any commercials; solid content on any topic.  Radio, in stark contrast, has too many commercials, has dumbed down, generic content I could give a crap about, and the sound quality sucks (if it even comes in at all).

Sometimes the only reward for podcasters is feedback and occasional donations. Unfortunately I should interact more. Everyone might benefit.

Today I was five podcasts deep when, all of the sudden, I realized I was hearing someone reading what I had submitted.  It was a comment I had sent in on this episode.  1 minute of fame!  Haha.  Very cool.  My comment was basically “good show”.  (A better comment would have included suggestions, but alas, I got nothin.)

The podcast is about being healthy.  Since I’m usually buried in tech news, as my waistline can attest, the show increases my health mind share.  That increases my chances of making healthy choices.  Health isn’t my passion, but the content is worthwhile.  You should check it out.

My Top 5 Podcasts For July

    Wednesday, July 16th, 2008
    1. You Look Nice Today (comedy, long)
    2. TWIT (tech news, long)
    3. tech5 (tech news, short)
    4. In No Particular Order (comedy, long) or The Bugle (comedy, long)
    5. Front Page (headline news, short)

This list is very similar to June’s.

It’s not for a lack of exploring. I subscribed to Podcast Alley’s feed for new podcasts but none have made this list yet.

Some of the podcasts out there would be decent, except the recording quality is poor. I fear for my speakers being blown out by a cough or a hearty group laugh. All podcasters should be using Levelator if no other post-processing is available.

I keep trying to like top podcasts like Keith and the Girl, but alas, I’m exclusively “tech” and “comedy” fan. I did like their site, nevertheless. Funny video on the homepage. Disturbing pictures of tattoos. Told you – I tried.

iTunes has a Jonas Brothers podcast at the top. Who are they? Let me guess. What the kids are doing.

iTunes list has a couple other interesting ones. The Economist. NPR Talk of the Nation Podcast. I’ll try these and let you know.

My Top 5 Podcasts for June

    Sunday, June 15th, 2008

This month was a step away from Mac news (“Mac OS Ken“) and the happy wanderer (“Amtrekker“), and a step toward comedy. I’m still enjoying to the aforementioned, but, for the first time, I was able to skip a few days without feeling naked.

I’ve come to appreciate the comedic work of Merlin Mann and company in “You Look Nice Today”. Someone asked Merlin what podcasts he listens to. That’s how I found “The Bugle”, a new entry into my lineup. It is Merlin month.

The 5-minute news segments are still an easy and worthwhile listen.

TWIT is a mandatory listen for people wanting to know what is happening in tech. Each episode brings great insights.

    1. Tech5 – Tech News
    2. Front Page – News
    3. You Look Nice Today – Comedy
    4. TWIT – Tech News
    5. The Bugle – Comedy
