My Top 5 Podcasts for December

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Here are my favorite podcasts this month.

1. “Stuff You Should Know” (web, itunes)

Interesting factoids about stuff I wouldn’t otherwise care about presented in a relaxed and organized way.

2. “TWIT” (web, itunes)

Tech news with knowledgeable guests.  The host, Leo Laporte, is a talk show hosting machine and somehow finds time to know everything about the latest tech stuff as well. They make sure I hear what’s anywhere near the mainstream.  I think it has enough listeners to actually direct the industry.

3. “You Look Nice Today” (web, itunes)

John Hodgeman (”PC” in the Mac ads) guests in this improvised comedy dialog between a few quick-witted guys including Merlin Mann.  I’ve spit up some coffee listening to this.

4. “The Bugle” (web, itunes)

Turns out there is humor in world headlines. I don’t know how they come up with this stuff.

5. “BoagWorld” (web, itunes)

Entertaining host talks about web development.

The keyboard is my friend.  Coding is a blast.  I can email for days.  Typing this blog entry is easy.  My Facebook friends might even mistake me for an extrovert. (more…)

So, I subscribe and listen to 49 podcasts.  (Up until I counted just now, I was saying 30.)  Some release content more frequently than others.  It’s good background for commuting, playing XBox, working out (I’ve heard), and, depending on concentration requirements, working.

Podcasting has a small audience, although growing, and is usually a labor of love.  Unfortunate.  The public is missing out big time!  Hardly any commercials; solid content on any topic.  Radio, in stark contrast, has too many commercials, has dumbed down, generic content I could give a crap about, and the sound quality sucks (if it even comes in at all).

Sometimes the only reward for podcasters is feedback and occasional donations. Unfortunately I should interact more. Everyone might benefit.

Today I was five podcasts deep when, all of the sudden, I realized I was hearing someone reading what I had submitted.  It was a comment I had sent in on this episode.  1 minute of fame!  Haha.  Very cool.  My comment was basically “good show”.  (A better comment would have included suggestions, but alas, I got nothin.)

The podcast is about being healthy.  Since I’m usually buried in tech news, as my waistline can attest, the show increases my health mind share.  That increases my chances of making healthy choices.  Health isn’t my passion, but the content is worthwhile.  You should check it out.

My Top 5 Podcasts For July

    Wednesday, July 16th, 2008
    1. You Look Nice Today (comedy, long)
    2. TWIT (tech news, long)
    3. tech5 (tech news, short)
    4. In No Particular Order (comedy, long) or The Bugle (comedy, long)
    5. Front Page (headline news, short)

This list is very similar to June’s.

It’s not for a lack of exploring. I subscribed to Podcast Alley’s feed for new podcasts but none have made this list yet.

Some of the podcasts out there would be decent, except the recording quality is poor. I fear for my speakers being blown out by a cough or a hearty group laugh. All podcasters should be using Levelator if no other post-processing is available.

I keep trying to like top podcasts like Keith and the Girl, but alas, I’m exclusively “tech” and “comedy” fan. I did like their site, nevertheless. Funny video on the homepage. Disturbing pictures of tattoos. Told you – I tried.

iTunes has a Jonas Brothers podcast at the top. Who are they? Let me guess. What the kids are doing.

iTunes list has a couple other interesting ones. The Economist. NPR Talk of the Nation Podcast. I’ll try these and let you know.

    Top Podcast Categories and Stats

    Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Podcast Alley puts numbers next to their categories of podcasts.  43,000 total podcasts.  Wow.  There are other podcast directories and better sources of data, but nevertheless I felt like making a chart.

July 2008 Podcast Category Numbers from Podcast Alley

How many have released content in the past 3 months?

What do the numbers say about the podcast listeners? What’s demographic?

I was a little surprised by what I found.  Music on top; kids and environment on bottom.  The largest group was uncategorized, with 12,000 podcasts.

Only counting categorized podcasts, a quarter are music podcasts.  Then there’s 13% tech, 10% comedy, 8% religion.  Business, education and society each have 6%.  Art, sports, video, health each have 4%.  And at the very bottom are tv, news, travel, food, games and hobbies, environment, kids, science and government.

Did some Googling.  Found better stats.

The Podcast Consumer Revealed 2008 (lots of interesting stuff; 20% of people have downloaded and consumed audio or video podcasts; 25% of them have a MySpace account; they block pop ups and SPAM and tend toward non-traditional media consumption)

Online Radio Listening At-Work Grows (radio source: internet 20%, air waves 80%; college grads more internet aware)

BuzzMachine – “Podcasts get ratings” (6% of US adults are podcast listeners)

Paul Colligan’s Profitable Podcasting (list of links, emphasis on surge of video podcasts)

    PodBridge cites the following:

    • US Podcast advertising spending increased 106% in 2007 and is projected to rise to $435m in 2012 (eMarketer)
    • US Podcast audience reached 18.5m in 2007, and will increase by 251% to 65m in 2012 (eMarketer)
    • iPod/Portable MP3 player ownership continues dramatic growth. Nearly four in ten (37%) own an iPod or other brand of portable MP3 player (Edison Research Apr 2008
    • 45.1% of active Internet users have downloaded a podcast (Universal McCann)
    • In the past 9 months, downloading podcasts more than doubled going from 14% to 30% among active Internet users (Universal McCann)

Podcasting News – New Media Is Now Mainstream Media; Podcasting Growth Is “Massive” (China wins again; of all subscribers, 18% listen and download everyday)

Is Podcasting Dead? (exaggerated headline of course, but good points, such as – don’t do it for the money)

My Top 5 Podcasts for June

    Sunday, June 15th, 2008

This month was a step away from Mac news (”Mac OS Ken“) and the happy wanderer (”Amtrekker“), and a step toward comedy. I’m still enjoying to the aforementioned, but, for the first time, I was able to skip a few days without feeling naked.

I’ve come to appreciate the comedic work of Merlin Mann and company in “You Look Nice Today”. Someone asked Merlin what podcasts he listens to. That’s how I found “The Bugle”, a new entry into my lineup. It is Merlin month.

The 5-minute news segments are still an easy and worthwhile listen.

TWIT is a mandatory listen for people wanting to know what is happening in tech. Each episode brings great insights.

    1. Tech5 – Tech News
    2. Front Page – News
    3. You Look Nice Today – Comedy
    4. TWIT – Tech News
    5. The Bugle – Comedy

My podcast finally has album art in iTunes!

    Monday, April 21st, 2008

“Work That Web” – Weekly Web Developer Podcast

The great fruit company must have a nice little process for reviewing podcast artwork. I submitted the podcast 4/5. It was approved and available 4/8. But it took until 4/21 to get this album art to appear. Check it out.

5 Podcasts to Improve Your Daily Commute

    Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

If you’re like me, you’ve grown tired of radio and want something with fewer commercials and better content for your daily commute. Explore podcasts. Improve the quality of your forced idle time by subscribing to podcasts from the iTunes podcast directory, hooking your iPod to your car stereo and hitting play. (Of course there are other MP3 players, and other media sources, but this is mine.)

Here are my 5 commuting faves – quick ones, 5 to 10 minutes each.

    1. Mac OS Ken – A witty Apple news program by Ken Ray. It’s concise and worth a listen. My commute always starts with this one. Weekdays. 10 to 15 minutes.

    2. Front Page – Get the world headlines with this daily New York Times snapshot. Every day. 5 minutes.

    3. Tech5 – A daily tech news review. The pessimistic host, John C. Dvorak, will grow on you. Best to take him lightly. Weekdays. 5 minutes.

    4. Tekzilla – Practical geek tips, often presented by listeners and more applicable. It’s a video program, so if you’re driving, just listen while you watch the road. Weekly 45 minutes, plus quicker 5 minute episodes.

    5. Podictionary – My vocabulary sucks, but nevertheless I’m fascinated by word origins. Ironic. Good thing there are informed people like Charles Hodgson to help. 5 minutes.

The type of commute may dictate the best podcast format to listen to or watch – long or short, audio or video. If you take the train, video podcasts would be reasonable. Your eyes are safely distracted. Otherwise stick to audio podcasts for the commute. If your commute involves lots of stoplights, like mine, shorter audio podcasts work. Red lights provide frequent breaks to safely proceed to the next podcast. If your commute involves the freeway, longer audio podcasts would be safest.

The important thing is, just like with cell phones, I’m careful not to let my device distract me from the primary task of driving.

Feel free to comment with your podcasts! I’d love to check them out. There are so many out there, something for everyone.
